It’s a great question isn’t it? What is life coaching? When I was asked this question I had to think about it for a moment. What is it really? And the answer can mean so many different things to so many different people. To answer this indulge me for a moment and answer my question first.

Have you ever had the opportunity to help someone? I mean really help someone? Someone that was stuck, that just didn’t know where to go and what to do, to free themselves up from what was holding them back? And they naturally gravitate towards you because you are always the one that has the answers, that has the natural ability to see things from a different perspective. You are the one that family and friends confide in, because you have always have the capacity to see things as they truly are and your biggest enjoyment is seeing someone’s eyes light up when they can clearly see how they need to change to resolve their challenge. In fact it inspires you.

And it’s you that has been the catalyst for the change you see in others. You have been their inspiration. It’s you who has been the person with the key to unlock the potential in that person. You are the one who has seen this person for their true capability. You have absolute certainty that once they see things clearly they will be able to succeed in their own life.

Is that you? Have you always known that helping others has been a passion? If that is you, then I know that you will understand when I answer your question “What is life coaching?”

When I begin to describe to you that there is pure enjoyment and excitement in helping others create success in their life, you will nod your head because you will know exactly what I mean. You will know that it is about helping people who are caught up in a web of helplessness, who are at a fork in the road and have no idea which direction to go in. You will know that, through living a life of purpose and serving, you will also be able to create an amazing life for you and your loved ones. You will also know that you are the aspirational version for those who seek your help. You will know that you are the inspiration for others to follow their true path because you represent what they are seeking.

So when I tell you it’s about serving others, paying it forward, it’s about the community you build and the incredible opportunity to live life helping others you will know what I mean. Because you want that too. So here’s the next question…when is your time?

How many times in life have you had the chance to do something new, something different, something you’ve always dreamed of doing, yet you’ve told yourself ‘not yet’? Why is that, do you think? What holds us back from finally saying ‘yes’ to ourselves? What is it about our belief of ourselves that holds us back from taking the chance to create a new life for ourselves and our loved ones? Why do we tell ourselves that we don’t deserve this chance? You know, when I look back on the number of ‘not yets’ that I’ve made in my life there’s certainly been a few and if I had a dollar for each one then I’m thinking I might have been quite well off by now J. So, when I finally said YES and decided to take the chance by taking on a journey of professional life coaching I know now that it’s all going to be fine. It’s not been the big scary step that I first imagined. Instead I discovered this new world of learnings and experiences that have changed my life forever and now I know I will never look back because I have finally found my true life purpose. And it’s opened up this world of community support and sharing and generosity that I hadn’t realised was there. To stand on the edge of this new world and then take the step forward has been the best gift I have given myself in years. And that’s a bonus, don’t you think?

Life’s funny sometimes. I know of people who have lived their life in what I call ‘the waiting room’. They’re waiting for something to help them make the decision to take the leap of faith that they have always held themselves back from. By sitting in the waiting room they have put their dreams on hold and are waiting for something to help them step forward. And I think it’s about the magic pill that will make it okay to step out of the limbo. And that magic pill may help instil more confidence, perhaps more belief that it can be done, perhaps it’s simply deciding to say ‘yes’ to us for the first time ever, whatever the reason is, we are waiting for something that is apparently elusive.

And maybe, eventually life becomes impatient with our indecisions and presents a moment in our life that is more a crisis point. The purpose being to force us to realise that it’s time to move out of the waiting room and take a step forward into our dreams. I call this our special travel voucher, our permit to take a chance and follow our true purpose, our true path, our truth. It’s our shake up to recognise and realise that we’ve had what it takes inside us all along. That we are unique and the world is waiting for us. And when you think about it, the magic pill is really not magic at all. It’s actually us. It’s our belief that we can do this and that we will be okay. And allowing that inner adventurer that is inside us step out and say ‘now it’s time’. And part of that for me has been the decision that I made to take on a professional life coaching journey. And I’m glad that life has given me this gift, has given me this opportunity to create the life I have dreamed about and finally I heard the message. Finally I said yes to me. And my greatest joy is being able to lead my clients to this realisation as well. You and I know that the waiting room is full and it’s time to step forward and create the life that we deserve to have. And as a result, what we do, what we create, can make such a difference to all those that we connect with. And my message to you is this…your travel voucher is waiting for you just outside the waiting room. When you’re ready, it’s time to cash it in and enjoy the ride!

I am often asked what the defining moment was for me in deciding to join The Coaching Institute as a student and take on coaching for life. And it’s a great question to ask, don’t you think? I mean, here I was at a stage of my life where I had a spectacular career, certainly avenues for advancement and in a really well paid secure job. I had opportunities that were fantastic and I worked with some great people. Yet my life wasn’t fulfilling, it really wasn’t. I can look back now and know that I put on a bit of a ‘happy face’. I am a naturally optimistic person who’s had her moments, that’s for sure. And it’s not always been easy. I’ve had challenges too, I’ve had tears and frustrations and I’ve been able to draw on strength that I didn’t realise I had to get through some of those moments.

And I also felt hollow inside despite my successful career. I finally realised that all those years of putting others first and doing what I believed others expected of me meant that I hadn’t done what I truly felt passionate about and that left me feeling empty. While my career was successful from everyone else’s perspective I didn’t feel fulfilled deep inside. And now I know that this was because I hadn’t invested in myself. In fact I had ignored my truth.

And I don’t think I truly appreciated just how much this would help to define me as a person today to the extent that I now celebrate my uniqueness. How inspiring is that, wouldn’t you agree? How absolutely freeing is it to know that finally we can be who we are, and be proud of that, once we decide to follow our passion.

…So, how do I answer this great question? I respond by saying that, in taking on coaching for life, it was about finally saying YES to me. I was finally able to give myself permission to put myself first and take my life in a new direction, and do something that I had always dreamed of. I love helping people. I get excited seeing their faces when they finally believe in themselves and that they can do anything they want to. And now I know I can do this professionally and love what I do.

I can create a life for myself and my family that really means something and making the decision to take this on as a career was a natural step forward. Now that’s not to say there weren’t a few scary moments as well in the early days, where I wondered whether I was ‘good enough’. The great news is through the fantastic learnings and support along the way I’m so cool with who I am and how I can serve from the heart. And getting really clear on the results that I want to achieve so that I can develop my own level of mastery and make that difference for others is inspirational and it’s something that I now live by.

So, it didn’t matter in that moment that I didn’t know every step and that I didn’t know just how far this journey would take me. What is important is that I realised it was time to do something for me. And that’s where my new world opened up. I found The Coaching Institute and I loved the community and connection which is core to the culture as is giving with a servant’s heart.

And when I stepped into the training room for the first time I felt like I had come ‘home’. You can imagine how fantastic that was, can’t you? I loved that I was surrounded by like-minded people with similar experiences to me, similar passions and similar stories on how they found their way to that moment in time. I knew it was right for me. And I now share my experience with other new students and I love to watch them as they grow and develop. This is such a beautiful community and I love how deciding to say Yes to me has now totally changed my life forever.
